Brake Loose are a Dublin based rock band who emerged from the pandemic with their new name in 2021, having formally been known as Live Wire. They have described themselves as ‘dirty, mischievous and fearless’. Playing in venues across Ireland they have paved their way, with their track Rebel Rebel (Evil like the Devil), for a sellout tour of Ireland and the UK in 2023 and 2024. Brake Loose are now set to release their highly anticipated debut EP Frenetic, a five-track EP of music that should have your foot tapping.

The EP kicks off with Dancing the Red Line. This is a throwback to the electric rock of the ’80s very much stylised by the iconic Billy Idol. The first track is fast paced symbolising, as the song mentions the passing of time in our life and how ‘it’s gone in the blink of an eye’. This track is one of those you can dance to and sing along with, easily. Following on from this is Treat Her Like a Rose this has a hard hitting drum introduction which is added to by a guitar hook to draw you into this track. Vocalist Alex Murillo seems to curtail a number of the lyrics allowing them to fade behind the banging drums. This track is more frantic than the first, which has an almost racecar sound to the guitar, that pulls you along through to the end of the track. Alex’s vocal range is once again highlighted with the drop out of the instruments allowing his clear notes to be heard.

Love on Fire continues the EP with an almost anthemic feel to the halfway point. This track is rousing and uplifting carrying you into the last couple of tracks. It’s almost a statement of ‘well you made it this far, keep going’. Again in this track the instruments drop back to showcase Alex’s vocals. The guitaring holds you to this track with clever tempo changes and held notes. This track takes us on a journey through love and how it is not easy. The Joker style laugh at the end makes you wonder whom in the relationship is laughing at whom. Kiss Me Bye Bye continues our journey through the melodic sounds of Brake Loose. The introduction is a little misleading as we are treated to what is preparing us for a metal/rock track. When the vocals kick in the tempo seems to drop to what can be described as a ‘Bond’ style theme track. It’s easy to see this along with the opening credit to a future Bond film…

A hard hitting wild and fast paced ride through things we all feel and experience

Closing out their debut EP is nothing less than Rebel, Rebel (Evil like the Devil). A powerful trip into ourselves and our own personal ability to accept who we are. The Billy Idol sound is back in abundance. The guitar and drum introduction has your head moving before the introduction of the hard hitting vocal drags you into this climatic, fast paced track, making you want to listen to it all over again.

Brake Loose showcase a range of styles within these five tracks, demonstrating their skills and range both vocally and instrumentally. A hard hitting wild and fast paced ride through things we all feel and experience. This EP is well worth a listen, so give it a spin.

ERB RATING: 8/10
