It’s all been leading to this. Two years of blood, sweat, and tears after emerging Phoenix-like from the ashes of another band, East Anglian outfit Aethoria have unleashed their long-awaited full-length debut – and the big question is: has it fulfilled all that promise? The answer to that is a resounding yes!

There’s always been a certain ‘something’ about Aethoria that’s made them stand out from the crowd, a determination to count that’s shorn of arrogance but full of confidence and class. For those who have caught them live, they play like their very souls depend on it and that connection to the music has boosted their presence and impact on the scene, quickly gaining a growing legion of followers. Whilst this ability to grab an audience by the scruff of the neck speaks of certain well-crafted facets, it’s the songwriting that has stayed with people the longest and certain numbers have become favourites that bury into brains and refuse to leave for days.

Fool’s Gold has nine such tracks and throws in an atmospheric and short opener too. The sound of ticking clocks and distant voices subsides before the huge melodic punch of More Time kicks in, the punchy guitars and rolling drums paired with Mecia-Jade Holden’s exquisite and distinctive vocals balancing melody and muscle. Gritty and with a tremendous solo, it’s not just the first full number but a statement of intent. The thrilling Eden follows, the insistent riff and invigorating feel carrying the wave of near euphoria and bristles with a modern metal sheen.

It could be another headlong charge to solidify the feel of moving forward at great speed, but Aethoria are too smart to follow a cookie cutter formula, and the result is the slinky and showstopping mid-paced ballad Brave. Arguably the highlight of the whole album, this slight foot off the gas moment is a beautifully constructed number that brings in piano and strings to add layers to the heady mix of spiraling guitars and an incredible vocal performance, so full of genuine passion that it would make angels weep. Stunning. Turning up the heat again, Human gets heavy and the fretwork is nothing short of molten, a furious and melodic Pull adding to the unstoppable force.

There’s an innate understanding of dynamics here and whilst some other bands may go for the crushingly fast, Quiet Ground benefits from the less is more school of thought, the weight in the placement of both the big chords and the spaces between them. Menacing and modern, this is a swinging wrecking ball and shows a maturity that points to a very healthy future. As if in contrast, latest single Popcorn is an urgent and driven number that’s built around the chorus’s huge hook and looks likely to be a fan favourite for years to come.

The titular Fool’s Gold is a multi-layered monster of a track and is a grand crowning achievement, widescreen but not sprawling or overly fussy, there’s a cinematic feel here that is intoxicating and involving. The calm after the storm is an acoustic version of the much-loved Stepping Stones and stripped back to voice and piano, the song is given a chance to truly breathe, this twist bringing out the real heart of the song after the fireworks of what went before. The only thing to do as the last notes fade is to reach once more for the PLAY button.

One of the best debut albums in a long time and a definite contender for album of the year, Fool’s Gold shows that Aethoria are more than ready for the big leagues.
