Live Review: Verity White at The Frog and Fiddle, Cheltenham, 09-10-21 with support from Land Captains

Words – Naomi Sanders

Gigs are often treated like a party, a get together of people to enjoy their favourite music in a safe environment. After a year of no live music, that celebratory feeling certainly returns whenever a live show does happen, especially if those shows are performed by the likes of Land Captains and Verity White, two incredible music creators that exude joy and fun within their music and performances.

That party feeling certainly came across in the venue, Cheltenham’s hearty Frog and Fiddle, as the actual performance area was in a wooden structure, like an old barn or hall, similar to the ones that people would attend for birthday parties. Still, it was a great place to hold the attendees and the incredible energy from the performers.

LAND CAPTAINS

Cut down by half for this performance, Bristol’s Land Captains decided to have just vocalist Tzarina Red and guitarist Hugo Bowman perform an acoustic set. Well, acoustic in the loosest term, as the two performed with stripped down midi tracks played from Hugo’s laptop. Whilst different, it’s still a unique take on a performance that was executed phenomenally. From beginning to end, it shows the power that is within their music, that even two members can get a crowd going. The set list included a lot from their upcoming EP, including the fan favourite Bananaphone, as well as closing the set with Delta, a track from their debut EP of the same name. Overall, one fantastic time for all who attended – if this was the show Land Captains delivered with two members, imagine how incredible it must be when all four are performing on stage!

VERITY WHITE

Homegrown from Cheltenham, Verity White made sure to make her hometown have a good time, especially as her and her band were to deliver a new song for the first time in their set. Around that new song, a lot of fun and joy, as well as emotion, was drawn. The soul and passion, especially within the song Wild was particularly beautiful to witness and certainly something unforgettable. Then, when the new song Another Angle was played…wow! Now that was truly incredible. Different to the sound they have already established, but it was refreshing and showed that this is the perfect direction for the group. They certainly proved the talent and musical passion that the genre needs and this band is certainly one to never miss out on if they’re anywhere near you or your nearest town.

Verity White will be supporting Jack J Hutchinson at Leo’s Red Lion, Gravesend on November 6th.
